• Hahndorf Academy

The Hahndorf Academy's collection is based around Hahndorf's history as the oldest German settlement in Australia.

The charming Hahndorf Academy building started life in 1857 as a school. As the town has changed, so has the building, becoming a Lutheran seminary, a hospital, betting shop and dental surgery.

The Academy has been an art gallery and museum since the 1960s, and today its museum tells the story of the town’s history, from the rich culture of the Peramangk people through to the German settlers to the thriving tourist attraction it is today. The Hahndorf Academy’s collection is based around Hahndorf’s history as the oldest German settlement in Australia.

Significant items include the spinning wheel brought over on the Zebra in 1839 to German language hymn and prayer books from the 1800s.
