• Macclesfield History Group

We are interested in the collection, preservation, research, writing and publication of all aspects of history relating to the Macclesfield district and hold exhibitions and display at local events.

Based at the Macclesfield Institute in Venables Street we collect, preserve, research, write and publish history relating to the Macclesfield district.

In 1980, to celebrate the centenary of the local Institute, the original History Group was formed to collate and publish a book about our local history, “Macclesfield, Reflections along the Angas”. Jim Faull, Head of the Geography Department of the Hartley College of Advanced Education, and his students kindly assisted with the project. Our most recent publication is “At Work, The Macclesfield Cheese Factory 1937-1975” by Lesley Schack.

With limited physical space we have little on permanent display, but have many images and paper records in storage that we are gradually getting online. Our main efforts are directed towards exhibitions at local events, our MOSAiC database, answering enquiries, and adding to our large website of 60+ pages. A search button enables fast access via keywords to all information on the website

Meetings held every Wednesday afternoon 1-5pm in the History Room at the Institute.
