Sharing a former school building with other community groups, the Mount Gambier History Group aims to locate, preserve and promote the built heritage, local history and family history of Mount Gambier and surrounding districts.
The group was originally established in 1985 to try to save historically significant buildings within Mount Gambier, many of which were being lost to development. It has since gone through a series of name changes reflecting its changing role within the community.
In February 2001 the group moved into its current premises, a former school building that is known as the Reidy Park Centre on O’Halloran Terrace. Here is housed the group’s collection of local archives including Cemetery Indexes (for Mount Gambier & SE, Western Districts of Victoria); Birth, Death & Marriage records; local history resources (SA & Vic); family histories; military records; local photographs; selection of genealogy magazines; hospital records; school records; H.M. Gaol Mount Gambier records; built heritage records; local maps; and CDs & microfiche. There are also some artefacts within the collection.
